Greetings & salutations,
Family, friends, and neighbors,
I am excited to announce my candidacy for Berkeley City Council, representing District 3.
We are at a time of transition for Berkeley – with a new mayor and at least three new councilmembers taking office this year – and we have a number of critical challenges in front of us. That’s why we need a District 3 Councilmember with proven leadership, fresh perspectives, and the enthusiasm and courage required to rise above the discord, build bridges, and get real results. It’s what I’ve done throughout my entire career as an entrepreneur, as a small business owner, and as a pioneer in the cannabis industry. And it’s what I’ll do as the next Councilmember of District 3.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is John “Chip” Moore, and I have proudly called Berkeley my home for nearly two decades. Born in San Francisco and raised around the world, I have always been drawn to diverse inclusive communities and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact to help them thrive. Berkeley became that community for me twenty years ago, when I first met my Berkeley born and raised wife and her deeply rooted Berkeley family.
Over recent years, as Katie and I are raising our two kids here and sending them to the same Berkeley Unified schools that my wife and multiple generations of our family have attended, I’ve focused even more on making a difference right here at home. I started working with community advocacy group Friends of Adeline regarding affordable housing and issues around policing and safety, which led to taking on the roles of Planning Commissioner, Chair of the Mayor’s Community Advisory Group, and Chair of Berkeley’s Police Accountability Board.
How can we make Berkeley a safer, better, and more affordable place to live? How can we create a more inclusive South Berkeley with actual affordable housing? How will the Ashby BART housing tower construction affect our neighborhood? How can we make our streets safer for our kids walking and riding their bikes to school? How can we support parents of school age children with access to affordable afterschool care? How can we help everybody live – and thrive – here in Berkeley, to make it a place where truly everyone belongs?
With a background in business management, consulting, and public service, I am well-equipped to address the challenges facing our city and to lead us towards a brighter future.
I am deeply committed to serving my hometown of Berkeley. I currently hold positions as a Planning Commissioner, Chair of the Police Accountability Board, Chair of the Berkeley Progressive Caucus, Co-Chair of Berkeley Unified School District’s Reparations Taskforce, and I served as the last Chair of the Mayor of Berkeley’s Community Advisory Group. You can read more about my experience and commitment to Berkeley on my website here.
With my wife Katie & my two kids in my corner and the support & guidance of our community organizations and stakeholders, I’m very excited for the opportunity to serve, which is why I need your help!
I’m participating in Berkeley’s public financing program so every contribution made by a Berkeley resident will be matched 6-1 by the city! I hope you’ll contribute $60 to my campaign today – and help us get off to a strong start.
Thanks so much for your friendship and support. Together, we can build a brighter future for Berkeley.
In community and service,
– Chip
