John "Chip" Moore

Affordable Housing

John “Chip” Moore seeks to make South Berkeley a more affordable, inclusive, and economically vibrant city, ensuring that all residents—regardless of income or background have a place in its future.

Fighting for Community Land Trusts (CLTs) and Affordable Housing

Focus

Fight for long-term affordable housing through Community Land Trusts (CLTs) to protect South Berkeley from gentrification and displacement.

Goal

Ensure homes are available for all South Berkeley residents, especially marginalized communities, by keeping housing affordable and under community control.

Plan

Build on Chip’s leadership as Planning Commissioner and his collaboration with Friends of Adeline to advocate for affordable housing projects, such as at Ashby BART, that reflect the community’s needs. With his strong connection to South Berkeley, Chip will fight to ensure everyone has a home, carrying on the legacy of his grandfathers who fought for a better life.

Workforce Housing for Essential Workers

Focus

Provide affordable housing for essential workers who serve Berkeley but are often priced out of living in the city.

Goal

Retain and support teachers, nurses, and public service workers by ensuring they can live where they work, reducing commutes and strengthening community ties.

Plan

Champion public-private partnerships to develop workforce housing that enables essential workers to build roots in the community they serve. Chip’s experience as Chair of the Police Accountability Board and BUSD Reparations Taskforce Co-Chair will ensure these policies are centered on equity and access for all.

Prioritizing Equity and Inclusivity in Housing Policy

Focus

Uphold South Berkeley’s legacy of diversity and inclusivity by ensuring that housing policies prioritize historically marginalized communities.

Goal

Address the displacement of long-term residents and create policies that prioritize people of color and low-income families, keeping the community diverse and accessible.

Plan

Use his experience on the Police Accountability Board and Friends of Adeline to push for housing policies that directly address systemic inequalities, ensuring affordable housing opportunities for all residents, particularly people of color.

Empowering Economic Development through Affordable Housing

Focus

Use affordable housing as a tool for economic empowerment, especially for families who have been excluded from building generational wealth.

Goal

Help South Berkeley residents build financial equity and long-term stability through homeownership in affordable units managed by CLTs.

Plan

With a background as an entrepreneur and small business owner, Chip will work to create economic opportunities tied to housing policies. His experience in securing equitable investments in the cannabis industry will be key in advocating for pathways to economic empowerment through homeownership
